Saving lives and money: Synthesis of biodiesel from waste vegetable oil, and waste animal fats.
Waste vegetable oil was used as a feedstock from which biodiesel was synthesized. Plant or animal fats contain fatty acids that can be converted via transesterification reaction into methylesters. These are organic compounds of high chemical energy.
In some parts of the world, trees are cut down and used as fuels. In the process, the earth is exposed to high levels of radiation plus high temperatures. In short, choping trees for fuel helps accelerate global warming as emission of carbon dioxide into the earth atmospher increases in the absence of plants that can absorb this greenhouse gas.
By recycling waste food to produce fuel, lives would be saved or reproduced.
The end product of interest (biodiesel) was tested by placing drops of it on a steel wool before igniting it- using matches. As can be seen, the flame produced was amazing. Other tests that are yet to be carried out include viscosity, and determination of energy density.
